Gypsy Arts Festival

Gypsy Arts Festival [2006-2010]

The Gypsy Arts Festival celebrated the rich contemporary and traditional Gypsy Roma Traveller culture through the arts. Balkan Gypsy bands, Spanish Flamenco dancers, Rajasthani Gypsy fakirs, traditional UK step-dancers, Scottish Traveller storytellers, Gypsy Roma Traveller visual artists, filmmakers and photographers, plus traditional crafts people set against the background of iconic painted wagons, gathered together in a variety of venues across the UK.

The Gypsy Arts Festival crossed generations, challenged stereotypes, and threw an excellent party wherever it went. Each Festival was different thanks to support from the local Gypsy Roma Traveller communities.

Gypsy Arts Festival was produced by Hungry Arts, a not for profit company established in 2005 to produce high quality, socially inclusive legacy arts events, that both expose minority arts in creative ways, and expand career opportunities for arts practitioners. The Company produced 5 Gypsy Arts Festivals in different parts of the UK, and was commended for promoting intercultural dialogue at the Institute of Cultural Cohesion’s (ICoCo) Awards for Bridging Cultures for its Gypsy Arts Festival Scotland 2008 and Gypsy Arts Festival South East 2008.

The Festival was also highlighted as a case study by Arts Council England for it's unique approach to bridging cultures.

At present there are no plans to stage any other Gypsy Arts Festivals in the near future. This website is an archival reference point only.
